Kanye West – My Beutiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Track by track break down:
01: Dark Fantasy(feat. Nicki Minaj)
The opening narration gives the track a sense of something bigger. It sounds special. Its dramtic. Its a beautiful opening. Kanye comes in lyrically strong and ready to go. One word description, elegant.
“So much head I woke up in Sleepy Hallow”
“Look like a Fat booty Celin Deon, sex is on fire, I’m the King of Leon-a Lewis”
“To Many Urkle’s on your team thats why your Winslow( wins low)”
The beat is breath taking and dreamy. Its an incredibly inspiring opener.
02: Gorgeous(feat. Kid Cudi & Raekwon)
Cudi on the hook is just the Kid being the Kid. Cudi fucking always kills hooks(in a good way). He is the king of rap hooks, No doubt.
“Aint no question if I want it, I need it, I can feel it slowly drifting away from me. I’m on the edge so why you playin, I’m sayin. I will never ever let you live this down. down. down.”
Kanye comes in with distorted vocals that are very argressive.
“Got caught with 30rocks the cop looked like Alec Baldwin”
“This week has been a bad message, I need a happy ending. And a new begining, and a new fitted, and some job oportinities that are lukcrative.”
“I need more drinks and less lights, and that American Apareal girl in just tights”
“Whats a black Beatle any way? A fuckin roach? Guess thats why they got me sitting in fucking coach.”
“The same people who tried to black ball me forgot about two things, my black balls”
Raekwon comes in like only he can. Like he has just been living this beat, been rapping on it for days and you tuned in just for a portion. Raekwon blesses this beat like only he can.
Kanye being Kanye. Cudi being Cudi. The Chef being the Chef. Perfect fuckin song.
GIGANTIC SINGLE. Serious fucking shit here. From the beat to the lryrics this song just slaps the shit out of you.
“No one man should have all that power” Its a statement from Kanye saying : Look, I run this shit. Deal with it.”
“At the end of the day god damnit I’m killing this shit, I know damn well ya’ll feelin this shit, I don’t need your pussy bitch I’m on my own dick”
Is he crazy? This song is arrigant, sexist, politically incorrect and just angry. But you know what? Its fan-fucking-tastic.
04: All Of The Lights(Interlude)
This interlude is refereshing and almost feels neccasarry. By this point you have been hit with such amazing sounds that you need a breather. This gives you the chance to catch your breath. But it still keeps the album going, a simple, classy, beautiful piece of music.
05: All of The Lights
Very Dramtic and cinamatic. Everything drives this track. Nothing is just there, it all has purpose and is necassary to the feel of the track. All of the differnt voices, the heavy drums, the harmonies. Its has a deep sound that is very powerful. So many layers! Snap. You could drowned in this track and become overwelmed. Its almost to powerful. But shit is way to intreging to stop. You can’t turn back now. You need to know how this story ends.
The guests are ridiculous and right on the money. All of them.
06: Monster(feat. Jay-Z Rick Ross Nicki Minaj & Bon Iver)
Just a gritty and dirty hardcore track. Jay is on top of his game, Nicki Minaj proves why there is so much hype around her and the release of her first album. Kanye is there with incredible consistency. Part of what makes this album so damn incredible is the incredible beats, rhymes and guest spots. At this point in the record, its safe to say this album is Kanye’s best work. Ever. Beats, rhymes, all of it. This is his greatest work. This album truely is a masterpiece. You know at this point in the album, that it can’t take a turn for the worse, it can’t let you down. You have faith in Mr West. You know he is the best. You just want to hear what he comes up with next.
The enregy on this song just as strong as “All of The Lights”.
“I’ma need to see your fuckin hands at the concert”
“Mix that Goose and Malibu, I call it Maliboo-ya”
“Cause you will never get on top off this, So mommy best advice is to get on top of this, Have you ever had sex with a pharoah? I put the pussy in a sarcophagus, Now she claiming I bruise her esophagus, Head of the class and she just want a swallowship , I’m living the future so the presence is my past, My presence is a present kiss my ass”
He is crazy. He has lost his mind. Its so fucking dope.
07: So Appalled(feat. Jay-Z, Pusha T, Prynce Cy Hi, Swizz Beats & Rza)
Swizz Beats intros the track as if he is a circus ring master unvailing a freak show. The beat is a haunting Rza inspired stage for a freak show of rap skill.
Jay’s verse seems as if its a contiuation of his “Monster” verse. Has the same tone and flow and subject matter. Its been awhile since I’ve heard Jay with such raw rough flow.
Pusha T shines. Proving why he is one of raps finest. Effortless flow. The Realness.
Prynce Cy Hi earns his keep. And brings his A game to the table. Cy brings it. He definitly belongs on this song just like the other more established artists do.
Rza toss in his two cents to make the track that much more raw and rugged.
Swizz Beats then comes back to close the curtain.
08: Devil In A New Dress(feat. Rick Ross)
Just super smooth effortless beauty. Kanye just floats on the beat and brings along his friend who is also super smooth and can float across this beat, Rick Ross. Fantastic verses, that become perfect when placed over this super tight throw back kanye beat. Kanye shows you he can still do it how he came into the game, even though he is in a game of his own now. No one else is anywhere close to where Kanye is right now creativily. Not on the scale Kanye is working with. He is doing it on such a large scale I think it would be more than fair to compare him to Prince.
“A nigga done a lot of waitin, we aint married but tonight I need some consamation.””Hood phenonminan, the Lebron of rhyme, Hard to be humble when you stuntin on a jumbotron”
“Why you standin there with our face screwed up? Don’t leave while your hot thats how Mase screwed up”
Kanye lets the beat catchi its breath after that seduction. Then its time for Rick Ross to do his thing.
Say what you want about Rick Ross, the man and his content and his cred. He is dope. He can ride a beat like a champ. He is in his finest hour here.
“Looking at my bitch I bet it give your ass a bone, lookin at my wrist it will turn your ass to stone.”
“I never needed acceptance from all you outsiders, had cyphers with Yeezy before his mouth wired””Spining Teddy pendergrass vinyl as my J burns.”
“Gettin 2pac money twice over”
09: Runaway(feat. Pusha T)
If you have heard Runaway on the radio you haven’t heard Runaway. Its great in radio edit form, dont get me wrong. But with a nine minute run time for the album version it is a different track. It stands alone as an epic journey, and in the context of the album it is where things really start to go crazy with this record. The ante is upped and the stakes are so high its diffucult to comprehend what you are hearing. Its so GI-FUCKING-GANTIC its scary.
Push T really shines here. This is my favorite guest spot on the album. I’ve always loved Pusha and its great to hear him on such an incredible recording. Its easy for me to say that Push takes this track form amazing to a-fucking-mazing.
“24/7 365, pussy stays on my mind”
Such a brutally honest line. So raw. Damn Pusha. You are Killing it!
10: Hell Of A Life
Kanye brings an interesting story to the table. While porn is becoming more prevolent in our society, it is still somewhat hush hush. Pop stars dont talk about the human side of porn in a pop song. They just dont. Kanye fuckin does. Its very heavy. Heaviest beat on the record. Its drilling.
“No more drugs for me, pussy and religion is all I need”
Snap. Its so fucking dark and violent. Its fucking beautiful. It paints the picture of a wreckless, carefree, hardcore, free of worry life style. Kanye makes it very believable. Very vivid. Sex and money, drugs and gold, dark erotic dance clubs… Just sleezy. This to me is where the Prince sleez really comes into play.
11: Blame Game(feat. John Legend)
The Aphex Twin Avril 14th sample is perfect for the song. Beautiful and simple. Gracefull and moving. Kanye doesnt hold back John Legend from introducing the track. John just does his damn thing so well. Not being over powered by the beat, the full emotion of the track is exposed before Kanye himself even spits on the track.John Legend creates the mood for almost a minute and a half. The effects Kanye uses on his voice and delivery give the song a sense of arrgresson and anger. Fuckin powerful. Just full of shit talking and half hearted well wishes.
“I know you ain’t getting this type of dick from local dude. and if you are I hope you have a good time cause I will definitly be having mine.”
The effects Kanye uses on his voice and delivery give the song a sense of arrgresson and anger. Fucking powerful. Just full of shit talking and half hearted well wishes. After Kanye spits his heart felt hatred. He brings in some “808’s and Heartbreak” charm. Keeping the honesty but ditching the over the top autotune.
“I know that you were somewhere, doing your thang, and when the phone called it just rang and rang, you ain’t pick up, but your phone accidently called me back and I heard the whole thang.I heard the whole thang, whole thang, whole thang, whole thang”
Damn Kanye, damn.
The Chris Rock dialog at the end is so degrading it becomes high art. It’s such an elegant way to break someone down and make them feel useless without you. Its trashy and safisticated at the same time. Its funny yes, but its almost too uncomfotable to laugh. Chris does his thing just like every other guest on the album. He isnt limited to a guest spot he does his thing for 2minutes and 30 seconds.
12: Lost In The World(feat. Bov Iver)
The transition from “Blame Game” is seamless. Almost as if its a conclusion to “Blame Game”. So much honesty. So real. So genuine. A massive wall of sound makes the track powerfull and uplifting. Its gripping. Another dramatic explosion of sound. Layers and voices, distortion and autotune. The beat just thumps. It feels as tall as the Sears Tower( aka Willis Tower). And as deep as the ocean. It easily speaks for itself upon listening. My words just don’t do it justice. Its a banger in its purest form. A seducing sequence of sounds and voices. Just a choir of charming tones. Raw emotion. And a powerful message. Its a pop song and its fucking huge.
13: Who Will Survive In America
The seamlessness continues into this brilliant closer. The icing on the damn cake. Wraps the whole album up in short but sweet fashion. “College Dropout” could have used a closer like this. But the young hungry Kanye just didn’t have this kind of artist expression in him yet. He would have his ups and downs. His highs and low. But he made it here. He made it to the top. How long will he stay there? Who knows? But his time spent there will be meaningful even if it ends with this album. Where does he go from here? Where do we go from here?
In closing. I was born in 1981, and I genuinly feel that this maybe the most important and meaningful album released in my life time so far. I’ve been with the album for such a short time, but I feel like I have known it forever. It is hands down a fucking masterpiece.
